ROOM4STEEL: Inspiring the Future of the Steel Industry

Room4Steel’s 2025 edition ends at Closing Event to Shape the Sector’s Talent

The steel industry, a fundamental pillar of the economy and industrial landscape, is undergoing a profound transformation. In this context, Room4Steel—is a joint initiative between the Bilbao School of Engineering and Siderex—has become a key reference in talent generation and retention, skills development, and revitalizing the sector’s image. Its promising results demonstrate a growing interest in steelmaking as a viable and attractive professional path. On June 20, a closing event was held to celebrate the achievements of this initiative.

A Commitment to Training and Specialization

Room4Steel was created with the aim of offering specialized training and promoting internships and Final Degree Projects or Master’s Theses within the steel industry. The initiative has exceeded expectations regarding enrollment in the University Extension Course. This program, designed in collaboration with a working group of leading industry companies, has addressed key areas such as steel processes and products, technology and innovation, process improvement and energy efficiency, waste management and sustainability, as well as the current challenges facing the industry.

The 2022 edition began by delivering a Training Pathway to 40 students, awarding participation certificates to all. For the 2024–2025 edition, the program—now officially recognized as a University Extension Course by the UPV/EHU—has been structured into seven training sessions that began in October 2024, complemented by visits to industrial plants for hands-on in-situ experience. The success of the training program has been made possible thanks to the collaboration of renowned companies such as ACERALAVA – Tubacex, Aceros Inoxidables Olarra, ArcelorMittal (R&D, Sestao, Olaberria Bergara), Fives, IDOM, Sarrale, Sidenor Aceros Especiales, Tubos Reunidos Group, Harsco Metals & Minerals, and Celsa Group – Nervacero.

Driving Innovation and Job opportunities

One of Room4Steel’s key pillars is connecting students with the industry through real research and technological development projects. Partner companies have proposed a range of research projects, from simulating operations in electric arc furnaces to developing practices for energy efficiency improvement or nitrogen control in electric arc furnaces.

These projects have proven to be both a “talent pool” for companies and a “fantastic gateway” into the job market for students. In fact, 60% of students from the previous edition signed job contracts with companies after ending their internships or final projects. The initiative offers “a high probability of employment” due to the demand for specialized professionals in the steel industry.

Commitment to Equality and Sector Visibility

Room4Steel not only aims to retain and generate talent but also seeks to enhance the industry’s image and promote inclusion, especially of women. The initiative has successfully increased female participation, reaching 30% in this edition, and actively promotes awareness-raising actions on the importance of gender equality. The steel industry is presented as an innovative, digitalized, and automated field that is deeply committed to sustainability and circular economy, seeking green energy alternatives to achieve climate neutrality.

The program’s visibility has been reinforced through a comprehensive marketing and communication plan, including a website (with over 10,000 visits) and social media campaigns with increasing engagement.

The Peak of Success: June 20 Closing Event

June 20 marked a significant milestone with the celebration of Room4Steel’s closing event. The event was a stage for students to present the innovative projects they developed. Additionally, the official release of the compiled course book covering the topics addressed throughout the University Extension Course took place—a valuable educational tool for future generations. As a final highlight, the award for the best project was presented recognizing the excellence and impact in the work carried out.

This event is not just a celebration of individual and collective achievements, but also, it’s a reaffirmation of Room4Steel’s commitment to the future of steel industry. The collaboration between the Bilbao School of Engineering and Siderex continues proving possibilities to renew and revitalize this sector, adapting it to modern times and preparing the next generation of highly qualified and dedicated professionals.

Room4Steel continues to consolidate itself as a key official training program to ensure the competitiveness and sustainability of the steel industry—attracting young and female talent, driving innovation, and committing, with each edition, to a brighter future for the sector.
