From Tradition to the Future of Rolling Mill: How MASSdiscover is Revolutionizing Quality Control

A few days ago, a prestigious rolling mill published content on social networks in which it could be seen, in a casual and unintentional way, how an operator measured the wire rod section in the middle of a rolling mill at over a thousand degrees with a thin sheet of wood, as a key operation for process control, whose ultimate goal is to reduce rejects in the finishing area.

This operation is carried out with a sheet of wood approaching the steel flow, which burns it, leaving its profile marked. On the surface, this may seem isolated, but we at ISEND continue to note that it is a common method. It is dangerous, inaccurate and dependent on the person performing it.

Nowadays, there are much safer, more accurate and automated methods, such as ISEND’s MASSdiscover solution, which provide essential information to get that data many times per second and, consequently, contribute significantly to improving mill performance and emissions due to the reduction of rejects and the reprocessing of the products to be obtained.

MASSdiscover has coils (sensors) capable of measuring the mass flow in real time, and therefore the section, at any point of the mill with great reliability, precision and safety. Its results allow optimizing the improvement of processes and products and represent a further step towards the complete automation of the mill. MASSdiscover is based on an eddy current coil, or sensor, which is extremely accurate and particularly resistant to the harsh conditions of rolling mills, as opposed to other technologies such as vision or laser, which are less reliable, less accurate and much more expensive.

According to our studies, around 10% of the total production is rejected due to non-compliance problems (quality and dimensions), sometimes in the rolling mill itself and sometimes at the customer. Using solutions such as MASSdiscover to improve processes and products can help reduce emissions by around 100,000 tonnes/year.
